Please borrow a neighbor’s bike if you don't have one to practice on before coming to Maui, especially if you haven't ridden since you were a child. Riding the stationary bicycle at the gym doesn't count. Although the bike ride is down hill, your brakes are located on the handle bars. You must have the strength in your hands to brake continually down Haleakala Mountain.
Children that meet the height and age requirement should also be respectful of the rules and regulations that are followed strictly by the bike companies. It is the responsibility of the parents to insure that their children understand the information presented at the safety briefing. Any person that is causing danger to themselves or others will continue the journey from a comfortable seat in the van. This is at the sole discretion of the tour guides. No partial or full refunds will be granted in these events.
All the bike companies want to insure that everyone has a lot of fun and also that they are returned to their hotel in the same condition they were picked up in. The road used for all bike riders, regardless if it is a guided tour or unguided bike tour, is the same road used for vehicle traffic. Some areas do not have guard rails. You must stay in control of your bike at all times. If you feel you need a break during the guided tour from riding, they will allow you to ride in the van until you are ready to get back on your bike (as long as the tour guide agrees to your riding abilities).
