Maui is known by it's nickname, The Magic Isle. The highest point on Maui is Haleakala, rising to 10,023 feet above sea level. Maui is 48 miles in length and 26 miles wide. Do not think that you can tour the entire Island in one day, though! Our average speed limit on Maui is 40 miles per hour...on the highway. Our population is approximately 91,400. Maui is made up of two Mountains (one extinct volcano and one dormant volcano) with a low-lying central area. The West Maui Mountains are the extinct volcano, while Haleakala is considered dormant.

Maui is surrounded by 120 miles of coastline and includes over 30 miles of beaches. Many are easily accessible and others are off the beaten path. Most of Maui's beaches have white sand; however, there are also black and red sand beaches. The ocean is Maui's playground! There are precautions to observe before entering the ocean. Offshore winds and currents can be powerful and they can change rapidly. Don’t stray too far from shore or kayak, windsurf or sail if warning signs are posted. If in doubt, use extreme caution. Better yet, ask a local about the conditions. It is a good rule of thumb to always observe conditions for 15-20 minutes before entering the ocean.
